Did You Know?

The average human heart beats about 100,000 times per day, which is about 2.5 billion beats in an average lifetime of 70 years.

How Age Calculation Works

Understanding the mathematics behind precise age determination

Calculating age might seem straightforward, but getting an exact result in years, months, and days requires careful consideration of varying month lengths (28-31 days) and leap years. Simply subtracting the birth year from the current year doesn't account for whether the birthday has occurred yet this year.

Our age calculator uses the chronological age method, which is the most widely accepted approach. It counts complete years, then remaining complete months, and finally remaining days. This is the same method used by governments, healthcare systems, and legal institutions worldwide.

Chronological Age

Your actual age based on the calendar, counting from your date of birth. This is what most people mean when they say "age" and is used for legal, medical, and official purposes.

Age Counting Systems

Different cultures count age differently. In East Asian age reckoning, a baby is considered 1 year old at birth. In Western countries, age starts at 0 and increments on each birthday.

Leap Year Handling

Leap years add an extra day (Feb 29) every 4 years (with century exceptions). Our calculator properly accounts for leap years when calculating your exact age in days.

Your Age in Different Units

Ever wonder how old you are in hours, minutes, or seconds?

While we typically express age in years, breaking it down into smaller units reveals some fascinating numbers. Here's what different ages look like when converted to various time units:

Fascinating Facts About Age & Time

Interesting things you might not know about aging and time

Heartbeats

The average human heart beats about 100,000 times per day, 35 million times per year, and approximately 2.5 billion times in a 70-year lifetime. By age 30, your heart has already beaten over a billion times.

Sleep Time

Humans spend about one-third of their lives sleeping. If you live to be 75, you'll have spent about 25 years asleep. During that time, you'll have had approximately 136,875 dreams.

Leap Year Birthdays

People born on February 29 (leaplings) only get to celebrate their "actual" birthday once every four years. There are approximately 5 million people worldwide with a February 29 birthday.

Global Life Expectancy

Global average life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900, from about 32 years to over 73 years today. Japan leads with an average of 84 years, largely attributed to diet and healthcare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about age calculation

Exact age is calculated by counting the number of complete years, months, and days between your date of birth and the current date (or a specified date). The calculator accounts for varying month lengths (28-31 days) and leap years to give precise results.
If you were born on February 29 (a leap day), your age is calculated the same way as anyone else. In non-leap years, your birthday is typically recognized on either February 28 or March 1, depending on legal jurisdiction. Our calculator handles leap year birthdays correctly.
Your total age in months accounts for partial months. For example, if you're 25 years and 7 months old, your total months would be 307. The simple multiplication (25 × 12 = 300) misses the extra 7 months.
Our calculator is accurate to the day. It properly handles leap years, varying month lengths, and calendar edge cases. For the most precise results, the calculation uses JavaScript's Date object, which follows the Gregorian calendar.
Yes! Use the "Calculate Age At" field to enter any date. This is useful for determining your age on a historical date, a future event, or for verifying age requirements for specific activities.
Most Western countries use the chronological method, where age starts at 0 and increases on each birthday. In East Asian age reckoning (used historically in Korea, China, and Japan), a person is considered 1 year old at birth and gains a year on New Year's Day. South Korea officially switched to the Western system in 2023.
Your zodiac sign is determined by the position of the sun at the time of your birth. The 12 zodiac signs each cover roughly one month: Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19), Taurus (Apr 20-May 20), Gemini (May 21-Jun 20), Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22), Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22), Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22), Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22), Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21), Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21), Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19), Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18), Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20).
