How to Calculate Tips

Learn the simple formula and mental math shortcuts for tipping

1

Determine Your Bill Amount

Start with the pre-tax subtotal of your bill. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional, though many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity.

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100)

Example: 20% tip on a $65 bill → $65 × 0.20 = $13.00 tip

2

Add Tip to the Bill

Add the tip amount to your bill to get the total. Optionally, round up to the nearest dollar for a clean number.

Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

Example: $65 + $13 = $78 total

3

Split If Needed

Dining with a group? Divide the total evenly by the number of people. Each person pays their share of both the bill and the tip.

Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

Example: $78 split 3 ways → $26 per person

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tipping and tip calculations

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage and divide by 100. Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100). For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip. Your total would be $60.
The standard tip for sit-down restaurant service in the United States is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 20% to 25% is common. For buffets, 10% is typical. The trend has shifted toward 20% being the new baseline for good service.
Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people tip on the total including tax for simplicity. Either approach is perfectly acceptable — the difference is usually only a dollar or two.
Calculate the total bill including the tip, then divide by the number of people. Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People. For example, a $100 bill with a 20% tip = $120 total. Split 4 ways = $30 per person.
Tipping for takeout is optional but appreciated, typically 10% to 15%. Staff still prepare and package your order. During busy periods or for large, complex orders, a tip of 15% to 20% is a generous gesture.
Tipping customs vary widely. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is generally not expected and can even be considered rude. In most of Europe, a service charge is often included, though rounding up is common. In Australia, tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional service. Always research local customs when traveling.
