Do This

  • Use hyphens — the universal word separator for URLs
  • Keep it lowercase — avoids duplicate content issues
  • Include your keyword — put it near the front of the slug
  • Keep it short — aim for 3–5 descriptive words

  • Underscores — Google treats them as word joiners, not separators
  • Special characters — ?, &, #, %, spaces break URLs
  • Keyword stuffing — e.g. "best-seo-tips-seo-guide-seo" looks spammy
  • Numbers & dates — "how-to-seo-2025" limits evergreen value
  • Very long slugs — anything over 60–70 characters gets truncated in SERPs

Pro tip: Once a page is published and indexed, changing its slug causes a 301 redirect which can temporarily affect rankings. Plan your slugs carefully before publishing and avoid changing them unless absolutely necessary.
